Common Conditions

Back and neck pain

Most people suffer from back pain, or even sciatica (nerve pain) at some stage in their life. Poor posture, wear and tear or trauma and stress can cause poor spinal integrity and pain. Osteopathy is well known for its ability to relieve such pain - in a survey of 10,000 people, osteopathic treatment was shown to significantly improve back and neck pain. Headaches and migraines

A common cause of headaches is posture-related tension in the muscles of the head, neck and shoulders. By relieving tension in these areas of the body, it is possible to reduce the regularity, strength and symptoms from these types of headaches..

Shoulder and neck stiffness

Inappropriate posture at work, driving, carrying children, playing various sports, and stress can all lead to shoulder and neck stiffness, discomfort or pain. Treatment can improve mobility of the joints, reduce muscle tension and help relax tired, overworked muscles. It can also reduce tension from stress which is often held in this area of the body.

Joint pain and stiffness

Pain and stiffness in joints can considerable discomfort and frustration in our everyday life. It may be due to a previous injury, age, or secondary to other health problems. By improving blood flow and nervous system and immune function in and around the joint, pain and stiffness can be markedly improved, if not completely resolved. Treatment can also stop the problem developing into an arthritic condition. .

Arthritis

Painkillers are often inadequate to relieve the pain associated with arthritis. We can help reduce pain and stiffness in the early stages of arthritic disease. For longer term relief we can advise on exercises and coping strategies to maintain optimum use

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)

Repetitive movements from prolonged computer use, driving, or physical labour can cause disorders of muscles, tendons and joints, particularly in the back, neck and shoulders. We regularly treat such work-related conditions, and can give remedial advice and prescribe preventative exercises.

Whiplash injuries

Recovery from injuries caused by a sudden impact such as a car accident has been shown to be improved with the use of musculo-skeletal treatment such as osteopathy. You should see your doctor first, and depending on the severity of the injury you may need an x-ray. Treatment can help to reduce the physical effects of the trauma, improve muscle and joint function, and relieve residiual stress and tension often held by the body long after the incident. Exercises and self-help advice will be given.

Postural problems

In everyday life it can be difficult to maintain good posture. From office work, computer use, driving, gardening, or caring for children, our posture is often compromised. With advice, exercises and treatment our posture can become more within our control and we can reduce discomfort, tension and pain without necessarily making significant work or lifestyle changes. Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Treatment can help the body to adapt and cope with the postural changes that will occur during and after pregnancy, and can relieve any areas of pain and stiffness.

Sports injuries

Sports injuries can affect people of all ages and abilities. Pain is often the result of localised trauma causing swelling of surrounding tissues and sensitisation of nerves. An osteopath can stimulate drainage of the local tissues which helps to reduce swelling, alleviate pain and improve mobility, culminating in a speedy recovery.

Stress

Stress affects all of us in different ways at different times in our lives, whether due to work, family, relationships, moving house or events outside of our control. Treatment can help with the physical effects of stress by relaxing muscles, calming the mind and nervous system, and improving other body functions affected by tension such as breathing and digestion.
